If you are involved with light commercial refrigeration equipment, it might be advisable to purchase a set of flare nut wrenches. These are shown in Fig. 21-5. This type of wrench helps preserve knuckles and flare nuts. An adjustable wrench is commonly used; however, these have a tendency to round the edges of the flare nut and cause the wrench to slip. The flare wrench holds the flare nut at each corner surface. In refrigeration work, the suction line is constantly wet or frosting; when the compressor stops operating, rust and corrosion can form between the flare nut and the copper pipe. A solvent and/or heat might have to be applied in order to loosen the flare nut.
